Yes. People install an app, sign in, and chat, send files or call, just like they already do. The security works in the background.
No. Messages are encrypted on the sender's device and can only be unlocked by the people in the conversation. The server stores them in scrambled form. Like any messaging service, the server does know which accounts exist and when they are active, which is why it matters that you control it.
Wherever you choose: in your own country, your own data centre, or a trusted cloud provider. This demonstration server is hosted in Germany.
Your administrator can sign the lost device out immediately. The user signs in on a new device and uses their personal recovery key to restore their encrypted message history.
By default, your Salus server is a closed network. If you want to, it can be securely connected to specific trusted partners that also use Matrix, and to nobody else.
Salus is built on the Matrix open standard and on open-source software that is publicly available for independent security review.
